Safe Harbor during Rough Seas - Making Advising a Safer Space for All
Our students are more diverse than ever in a world that feels more and more divided.
Topic ideas may include, but are not limited to, diversity and inclusion in advising, meeting students where they are (swimming out to them!), how to make students feel comfortable coming to us, how to recognize bias, etc. Topics may also include how to better work with specific student populations, such as adult students, minority students, first-generation students, returning students, first-time freshmen, technical students, graduate students, students with disabilities, and students with socioeconomic disadvantages.
Swim at Your Own Risk: Recognizing and Reading the Flags
Anxiety and stress in students is on the rise, but there are resources to help.
Topic ideas may include, but are not limited to, spotting red flag behaviors related to emotional health, campus safety, de-escalation techniques and resources, referral resources, campus resources, community resources, building partnerships with campus resources or community resources, etc. Topics could also include spotting red flags for academic struggles and support resources.
Avoiding Rip Currents in Advising - Survive and Thrive!
We spend a lot of energy supporting our students, let's avoid exhaustion and stay afloat instead of being carried away by the currents.
Topic ideas may include, but are not limited to, supporting academic advisors, mental health/self-care, setting boundaries, combating burnout, work-life flow, professional development, training tactics for advisors, etc.
